Charging Volkswagen Electric Vehicles on IT and TN Mains: A Practical Overview
Posted by KAROLINE OLSEN

Charging on IT and TN Grids
Volkswagen's electric models support multi-phase charging (up to 3 phases) depending on the software version, for both IT and TN grids during home charging. However, please note that not all local power providers allow multi-phase charging on IT grids, and some charging box manufacturers do not recommend it due to potential challenges.
On TN grids, multi-phase charging is fully supported for all models, with up to 3 phases. This allows for faster charging without limitations.
Charging Power and Speeds
The speed of AC charging (normal charging) depends on several factors such as grid type, charging box, and the car's built-in charger. Here is an overview of the maximum charging power for Volkswagen's models for home, workplace, or public charging:
| Model | On-board charger |
|---|---|
| ID.3 | Up to 11 kW |
| ID.4 | Up to 11 kW |
| ID.5 | Up to 11 kW |
| ID.7 Fastback | Up to 11 kW |
| ID.7 Tourer | Up to 11 kW |
| ID. Buzz | Up to 11 kW |
| ID. Buzz Cargo | Up to 11 kW |
| e-Caravelle | Up to 11 kW |
| e-Transporter | Up to 11 kW |
| Multivan | Up to 11 kW |
Supported Models for Multi-phase Charging on IT Grids
The following models support multi-phase charging on IT grids for home charging:
- All models with ID. Software 3.x
- ID.3, ID.7 Fastback and ID.7 Tourer
- ID.4 and ID.5 with ID. Software 5.4
- ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo with ID. Software 5.4
Models such as ID.4, ID.5, ID. Buzz Passenger Car, and ID. Buzz Cargo with older versions (ID. Software 4.x, 5.0 or 5.2) are currently not compatible with multi-phase charging on IT grids. Volkswagen plans to fix this in future updates – please use 1-phase charging until then to avoid problems.
Tips for Safe and Efficient Charging
For best results, always update the car's software via Volkswagen's app, the car, or through a dealer. If you are on an IT grid, consider a dedicated charging box that supports 3-phase charging on an IT grid. This reduces the risk of overload and provides faster charging. Remember: home charging is often the most cost-effective option, especially at night when electricity prices are lower.
