Mennekes® is the German company that developed and designed what we call the ¨type 2¨ plug/connector which is used in newer electric vehicles. This mode 2 charging cable for electric cars and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) has a schuko plug (toward a normal socket) of 10A and is in a special class for portable charging solutions.
Cast Schuko Plug
The Schuko plug is fully cast and has a long cable relief- increasing its service life. With a temperature sensor in the plug, you can use the charging cable safely, as it will reduce the current load or interrupt the charge in the event of overheating.
Robust and Flexible Cable
Mennekes® has the market's most flexible and mechanically durable cable. It contains internal cable routing cushions, filling the negative space within the cable- which protects the conductors when the cable is being bent or twisted. The optimal insulation thickness and rubber compound provides exceptionally long durability, increased safety and maximum flexibility.
Small and Solid Control Box
This small, light but solid control box is safe and reliable. It has a built-in earth fault protection and DC-RCM (6mA). At the same time, its waterproof exterior can withstand tough outdoor use. (IP69K certified). The temperature sensor found inside the unit protects and prevents heat build-up and thus can extend the life of the product.
Fully Cast Type 1 Plug
Fully molded plugs that are filled with epoxy create a solid mass that fills the entire plug and distributes the heat evenly, thus avoiding overheating of the charging contact. It also seals and protects the conductors, resulting in a waterproof product. The rubber handle provides a better grip during use and supports and external locking mechanism with the usage of a padlock on the release button.
The 8 meter charging cable is very flexible and thin which makes it easy to wind up and store due to its special outer sheath. At the same time, the cable and the control unit are robust enough to withstand being run over by a car (in accordance with IEC 62335).
The temperature sensor built into the schuko plug (household plug) and control box automatically reduces the amperage- should the temperature exceed 55°C. This will, thus, continue to charge your car safely and securely. It will stop charging at 65°C and will automatically continue when the temperature is at 45°C.
The charging cable has a self-test function that checks for, among other things, connection errors and provides feedback to the user via LEDs. The charging cable will check that the earth conductor is present before it will start charging. In the event of any faults, the power circuit will be cut off immediately. This, thus, provides extensive protection for the car and the consumer.
An adapter/ transition from an industrial plug (blue CEE male) to schuko/ household plug (female) allows you to use this charging cable at even more charging points. The transition/ adapter can be found here (HER).

Questions and Answers
Renault ZOE is the only car in Norway as of today that is not suitable for the standard charging cable Type 2 mode 2 in all sockets regardless of the network system. Does this work on an IT network? The charging cable should work if the charging cable is connected to a TN network, but unfortunately will not work in an IT network. Nevertheless, some start-up problems have been reported when charging the Renault ZOE.
How do you know what kind of network system you have at home? It is most common with IT networks in Norway (approx. 70%). In an IT network system 230V enters the home which is then distributed in the fuse box and the current meter is marked with 230V. A TN network is most common in newer buildings, (approx 30%). In a TN network system 400V enters the home which is then distributed to 230V in the fuse box and the current meter is then marked with 400V.
