Cargo box / ski box for the tow bar

SKiiBOX is an aluminium cargo box that mounts straight onto the tow ball. You get 345–403 litres of extra space at a height you can reach from the ground, without climbing on the car and without making the car any taller than it already is. Developed in Norway, for Nordic roads, winter and road salt.

Built for cars that can't take a roof rack

Many electric cars have a panoramic roof, a glass roof or doors that swing upwards, and then a roof box simply isn't an option. Others have no roof rack mounting points at all. The tow bar is there either way.

Choose the length that suits your car

The box is mounted crosswise behind the car, so the length of the box runs along the width of the car. Choose a length that does not protrude more than 15 cm on either side of the car.

Crash tested at VTI

A box that comes loose in a collision becomes a hazard for the traffic behind. SKiiBOX has been crash tested with a load at VTI, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, at two collision levels. In both tests the box and the mounting stayed in place – no part came loose.

Tested at VTI on 27 August 2026. The requirement levels are taken from SS-ISO 11154:2023 (the standard for roof racks) and from the crash pulse for child restraint systems in ECE R17 / R129.

Four movements and it's on

The lock grips the ball directly. No tools, no drilling, no permanent installation on the car – and just as quick to take off again when you don't need the box.

Release the lockPull out the safety catch and turn it aside.
Place the boxLift the locking lever and lower the box onto the tow ball.
Lock it downPress the locking lever down until it engages.
Secure itTurn the safety catch into place and check by lifting gently on the lever.

How much can you load?

Two limits apply, and the lower one always wins: the box's own load capacity of 50 kg evenly distributed, and your car's permitted tow ball load. The weight of the box itself counts towards the tow ball load.

The permitted tow ball load varies from car to car and is stated in the vehicle registration document or the owner's manual – look it up rather than assume. SKiiBOX weighs 29–32 kg in aluminium and 32–35 kg in black, depending on the length. Treat the result as an upper limit and leave a little margin: that is what keeps braking and road grip predictable. Use the lashing points inside the box to keep the load in place.
